What is reflexology?
Reflexology is based on the principle that all the systems and organs of the body are mapped out on the feet in the form of reflexes. By employing specific techniques using the thumbs and fingers, I work on these reflexes to help bring them back into balance.
Imbalances in organs and body systems will usually show up on the corresponding foot reflex, making it painful or crunchy. Some reflexes can feel hard, dry, soft or spongy. I also get other information from the feet, such as the colour, the texture and the energetic feel of specific areas or reflexes.
During a session I work on all the reflexes, starting at the head which is represented by the toes. I cover every major organ and body system and I also balance glands by holding the relevant reflexes. Each treatment is tailored to the client’s specific needs.
What does it help with?
Reflexology improves circulation and blood flow, stimulates the nervous system and promotes lymphatic flow. This can have the following benefits:
- Increases relaxation
- Improves mood
- Balances glands
- Supports the organs of elimination
- Reduces pain and swelling
- Restores a state of balance to the body
- Aids sleep
Reflexology is a complementary therapy. It should not be used in place of any medical treatment but works well alongside it.
Is it suitable for everyone?
Reflexology is suitable for everyone, from newborn babies to the elderly. The only time it is not advised is for the following conditions:
- Blood clots
- Contagious skin conditions
- Shortly after an operation
- Unstable heart conditions
- A foot fracture
- If you are under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs
How many sessions will I need?
This will vary from client to client. I will assess you at the first session and then advise you on what I think would work best for you.
What happens in a session?
The first session is around 1.5 hours. I take a detailed history which enables me to tailor the reflexology specifically for you. You will then receive a hot towel foot cleanse and a reflexology treatment.
Subsequent sessions are around one hour. I do a quick check in with you at the beginning so we can catch up on where you are with everything. You will then receive a hot towel foot cleanse and a reflexology treatment.
At the end of the session I can show you any reflexes that could benefit from additional massage and encourage you to massage them gently each day. This can really help the body to rebalance quicker.
I also often give homework, getting you to make small changes to your lifestyle between sessions, including diet and liquid intake, exercise and stress relief. This is of course optional but clients who take these suggestions on board often see better results.
If you are interested in adding other therapies to the sesion, such as counselling, EFT, META-Health or Bach Flower remedies, I can offer extended sessions. See Other Therapies for more information.
What do I need to wear?
You will need to remove your shoes and socks for the session. I work up the leg to the mid calf so loose fitting or stretchy clothes are best.
I have a very comfortable reclining chair and you will be offered a cosy blanket so that you are warm and comfortable.
Can I talk during a session?
Reflexology works better when you are relaxed. I therefore like to encourage clients to close their eyes and switch off. I provide an eye mask to make this more comfortable.
However, I know it can be difficult to relax, especially if you have a lot of stress in your life. Chatting may feel more comfortable and that’s fine with me. It’s your session so whatever works for you! Many clients start by chatting and then, as the treatment progresses, find themselves feeling more and more relaxed and wanting to switch off.
How will I feel afterwards?
After a session, make sure you take it easy for the rest of the day, avoid stimulants and alcohol and drink plenty of water within the first two hours.
Most people don’t notice any significant side effects but the following can occur for up to 48 hours:
- Feeling tired or lethargic
- Passing more urine than usual
- Loose bowels
- Headache
- Tender or tingling feet
- Emotional releases
Any after effects are good signs that the body is eliminating waste and rebalancing so there is nothing to worry about. Just drink plenty of water and make sure you rest.
